Apollo’s Second Birthday and My New Hat

29 Jan

Yesterday was a good day. My beautiful grandson, Apollo, turned two years old! He had fun! We bought him a drum set and the funniest part is that his mother suggested it! I have to share his funny antics with you. A pic of him hiding in the kitchen cupboard. He is just toooooo cute (yes I’m a proud Nana.)

So I know it’s been a couple of days since I last posted. It’s Midnightpassion’s fault. Yah, that right! She took me to that LYS again. But I’m not going to tell you that it was my idea, let’s keep the blame where I want it. So while we were there I found MARBLE CHUNKY.

Midnightpassion has a terrible affliction…. her hands are allergic to real wool. Again, yah…you read it, a fiber arts junkie who is allergic to wool. Imagine how irritating that is. Why am I telling you this? Marble Chunky is acrylic! It looks like beautiful, real wool. It feels so soft and wonderful to work with. In fact so nice to work with that I had to make my hat:

The pattern I used came from Knitty. It’s called Coronet and it is really easy to work up. And very warm to wear.

I did have to alter the pattern so I could use my chunk but it wasn’t hard to do. Those gauge swatches are a good time investment. They can really save you a lot of hassle down the road. Trust me..been there done that, got the t-shirt. Not going back!

The original reason that I wanted to go to the LYS was to buy a cable needle. Mine is missing in action and working with a DPN just doesn’t cut it. There are ways around each tool but ultimately the right tool for the job does save time and effort and make the journey much more enjoyable. In fact, I made a kit that fits in my pocket using the trusty Altoids’s tin with a fridge magnet glued into the lid. It hold my little scissors and needles very nicely. One of these days I will decorate it:

How long did it take you before you attempted cables? Have you yet? Many newbie and experienced knitters alike are nervous to attempt cables. Trust me…. it’s really quite easy it just looks hard. Give it a try, you may ask yourself, “Why didn’t I try this sooner? This is fun!”

Until tomorrow (I hope) my friends. Have a great day.

Preparing for Another Season of Kayaking and Birding.

25 Jan

Yes, I know it’s January but I can’t help thinking about “yakking”. The adventure of exploring new places and old places alike. I have added so many new birds to my life list these past few years. The peacefulness of floating under the trees with a good pair of binoculars and my camera is amazing.

My dream is to one day paddle Greenland or Iceland. I know..it’s odd but beautiful. Realistically, one day I’m going to take my gear to B.C., specifically Campbell River on Vancouver Island. I can see my Sis, her husband and two beautiful boys and my Bro and his wife while having an amazing adventure kayaking some of the sites.

Every year I get some new gear so that eventually I’ll have everything I need to achieve my goals. This spring I’m thinking about this:

Spring paddling can be very chilly. I have been wearing an old Dickie Dee’s freezer jacket. As you can imagine, it does hold the water and is really cold when it gets wet and it certainly doesn’t dry very quickly. BRRRRRR.

So far I’ve found that Paragon Sports has the best price which is $100 less than other places. WOW. I love the style but I think I’ll go with the navy blue. Here’s the link:

My kayak is a Stearns Spree inflatable. Everyone’s situation is different. I wanted to be able to take my kayak anywhere without too much fuss. I don’t have the budget for a good hardshell and roof racks, etc… This kayak is my baby. And it takes me where I want to go, either a nice paddle up the river to birdwatch or a 30km round trip. Yah.. that’s right 30KM! It was great! We paddled Lake Erie from Port Bruce to Hawk’s Cliff just east of Port Stanley.

Last year I invested in a good paddling PFD, a paddle and a hat. For the pfd I chose a Salus Gjoa:

I’m a plus sized woman and find it hard to get gear that fits comfortably. This PFD is excellent. Comfortable, fully adjustable. Most importantly it works! Trust me, on Lake Erie the waves are wicked at times and the undertow is REALLY strong. I’ve pushed my toes off the bottom a few times, but that’s another story. GRIN I’ve spent MANY hours in this vest and have no complaints. It really does pay to research, research, research before you buy.

My paddle is an Aquabound Sting Ray:

Having a good paddle makes a big difference in comfort and stamina. My old paddle was a really cheap, all purpose type. The Aquabound is much smoother to use and you get much better distance per stroke.

And last but not least, my hat. I’ve never spent so much money on a hat. And probably wouldn’t have if my In-Laws hadn’t given me a gift certificate from The London Paddle Shop for Christmas last year. I mulled it over and decided I needed a good hat. Baseball caps just don’t provide enough protection from the sun and they get HOT! Not to forget the fact that quite often baseball caps, as well as various other styles SINK. I spent some time researching and decided on a red Seabird Sport paddling hat:

Yet again, I am glad I researched. This hat is lightweight, durable and FLOATS! I’ve never had such a comfortable hat in my life. I wear it in the summer for much more than paddling. Love it!

Currently I have a really old pair of 10×50 binoculars. Not sure what brand because the name is worn off them. LOL! They are heavy and NOT waterproof so I have to be really careful with them. I think it’s time for something better. Not sure it’ll happen this year but I found a good deal on a pair of Nikon
8×42 Monarch ATB Waterproof

According to the reviews these are the best in their category. They are lightweight, crisp and clear…. And…WATERPROOF! Both will be a blessing. No more stiff neck.

I just can’t wait for the season to start. Stay tuned for some brush-ups on technique, gear, navigation, safety and trip planning.

Mobius and Re-thinking Soapmaker’s Snobbery

24 Jan

I’ve been thinking about mobius knitting lately. It’s just so cool! Well I decided to give it a try…..again. So off to www.youtube.com I go. And who else would I look up but Cat Bordhi:

I must admit, I’ve tried to knit this several times. The cast on really isn’t that hard once you throw away some old school thinking. But once you’ve cast on, what’s the trick? Well my crazy friend, MidnightPassion, helped me out. Four simple words and I could suddenly see it! Knit into the triangles. Just that simple, and it really is. I was finally able to cast on AND knit.

mobius

Do you see it? The “twist”? I really am knitting the top and bottom stitches of the piece. Amazing. This could become very addictive. It’s almost like meditating while knitting. And then thoughts tend to drift around…… to soapmaking.

I’ve been rethinking my snobbish ideas about using kitchen grease for making soap. Okay… now your thinking, “YUK! Certainly you don’t think I’d use that on my skin.” And you’d be right!

However, lately I’ve been a little cash strapped, as many of us are these days. Always looking for ways to create or recycle as much as possible. A penny saved really is a penny earned! My MidnightPassion sent me this interesting blog to look at. I have been making homemade cleaners and laundry soap. They work great and save a few bucks. The blog, Little House in the Suburbs is an excellent blog. Make sure you take a good look around. Well worth your time.

Being raised by parents who grew up during the Great Depression of the 30′s I’ve learned to WASTE NOT! Every time I drain grease from my hamburger or bacon it always goes into a tomato sauce jar and I put it in the fridge. The birds enjoy it. When it’s full I usually mix it with birdseed and put it out for them to dine on. Lately I just can’t justify the cost of the birdseed so what do I do with the jar of grease? You see where I’m going with this train of thought…… my next batch of soap will be with kitchen grease. Let’s see if it really is that terrible.

I’ll let you know how it works out.
