According to Wikipedia:
“STEEM is a cryptocurrency based on the social media and content-focused Steem blockchain, which was created on March 24, 2016 by Ned Scott and the blockchain developer Dan Larimer. With over 1.2 million registered accounts and a daily volume of more than a million signed operations, Steem is amongst the five blockchains with the highest level of activity. In terms of total market capitalization, STEEM is currently ranked at place 40. with a market capitalization of more than 159 million USD. (March 13, 2019).”
Spend some time later exploring the wikki. I also suggest reading this FAQ and the STEEM Whitepaper. But later, I don’t want to loose your attention just yet. I’m going to show you how to “dip your toe” into Cryptocurrency.
What is Cryptocurrency and why should it interest me?
When we talk about “social media” it’s not what you may think. To quote @rhondaK from Steemhouse Community, “Steem is like the Wild Wild West.” It’s a decentralized blockchain. DECENTRALIZED. I’ll get to why this is so important in a moment.
Your average Blogger, Facebooker, Instagramer, freelance writer, etc. works hard to earn FIAT. Earn what? Cash, USD or in my case CAD. According to Investopedia:
“Fiat money is government-issued currency that is not backed by a physical commodity, such as gold or silver. The value of fiat money is derived from the relationship between supply and demand and the stability of the issuing government, rather than the worth of a commodity backing it. Most modern paper currencies are fiat currencies.”
This is a centralized currency, strictly regulated and controlled by the Government’s Central Banks. I don’t think I need to dive too far down this rabbit hole. I’m sure you see what I’m getting at.
Now if you go to Google and search “what is cryptocurrency” you will see this definition:
“a digital currency in which encryption techniques are used to regulate the generation of units of currency and verify the transfer of funds, operating independently of a central bank. Decentralized cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin now provide an outlet for personal wealth that is beyond restriction and confiscation”
A DECENTRALIZED currency! The only possible limits is our imaginations. It’s a whole new “Multiverse”.
Are you even a little excited? Curious? I was too but had no idea how to start and I certainly didn’t have any FIAT to spare. “How would I learn all the in’s and out’s of the system?” Let’s face it, not everything you find on a search engine is accurate.
Luckily for me my sister, @shadowspub, invited me to join Steem. At the time she explained it as, “a blogging platform where you could earn cryptocurrency for posting quality content.” It was a way for me to get my feet wet! Thanks Sis!
“No one likes to move beyond their comfort zone, but as the saying goes, that’s where the magic happens. It’s where we can grow, learn, and develop in a way that expands our horizons beyond what we thought was possible.” –Andy Molinsky
Since joining the Steem platform I’ve witnessed people who are striving to help others through charities. Charities I’d never heard of and had no idea of the hardships they endure while rendering aid. These people harness the power of Steem and the Community to be able to help with 100% of the funds they collect. One in particular is @rhondak who runs Tazewell ARC in Central Appalachia. This lady has true GRIT!
I’ve met amazing artists, musicians, writers, game developers, gold stackers, fiber artists, homesteaders, veterans, activists, foodies, travelers, photographers, entrepreneurs …. I really could go on. The most important thing I’ve found is Community. The Steem platform has many communities geared towards people’s common interests and goals.
As a blogger I love that I can integrate my WordPress blog with Steem using a plug-in called Steempress. Using this plug-in each time I post on my WordPress blog I’m also posting to my Steem blog. I can integrate all the major social media for marketing while utilizing similar apps on the platform such as Steepshot and dTube.
Steemians recognize the power of the platform and what can be built upon a decentralized currency.
Imagine being able to implement a Universal Basic Income program for anyone who wants to partake? @SteemBasicIncome is a perfect example. The only way to earn “SBI” is to purchase one as a gift for someone else using STEEM and you will receive one too. Each time you post, SBI gives you an up-vote relative to the amount of SBI you have. Up-votes=STEEM.
The Steem platform is an excellent opportunity for you to get out there and pursue your passion, whatever that may be. This is not a place to “get rich quick” but if you work at it you’ll be amazed what you can achieve.
Joining the Steem platform has pushed me out of my comfort zone. My sister calls me “the Introvert’s’ Introvert” so you can well imagine how scary it was at times but it has been rewarding. I found a Steem “family” called @thealliance. I’ve been known to curate, do videos, sing little ditties, and co-host a radio show. And yes, @snook made me live stream some very adult comedy. LOL! Yup! I did that.
Using Discord is the most effective way to connect with other Steemians.
Connecting with other Steemians using Discord is the most effective way to get yourself out there. Each Discord is geared towards different types of communities and allows you speak voice, chat via text, video, and join interactive radio shows. Don’t worry, it’s free and easy to use. Downloads are available for Windows, Mac, Apple, Android, and Linux. The Web version is not very stable so I don’t recommend it.
After you have installed Discord and registered come back here and click this link to join The Ramble.
The Ramble is a community started by my sister, @shadowspub nearly two years ago. I’m very proud of the supportive community she has built with the help of her team, @thekittygirl, @sargento and @bluefinstudios. You can ask questions, learn about Steem and meet amazing people. Come poke around the resources, listen to one of the many radio shows, share posts on Thursdays at Pimp Your Post Thursday, and attend monthly Witness Chats. From there we can help you find the communities you want to connect with. I hope to meet you there. My username is, of course, @artemisnorth.
